I was very fortunate in my life to learn to make money. In 1980 I met an investor who took me in as an apprentice and taught me the one tried and true formula for building wealth – Rule #1. A year later I started investing on my own with $1000 and a promise to myself that I’d become a millionaire in 5 years. Almost exactly five years later I had accumulated $1.45 million; We retired to Iowa to raise our children in a community of like-minded meditators, I continued investing in public and private businesses and Rule #1 continued to work its magic.
In 1998 I began to talk in public about my experience with Rule #1. In 2000 I was invited to be on stage in a small arena in Corpus Christi, Texas with Zig Ziglar. My talk was well-received and over the next ten years I gave hundreds of arena speeches with speakers like Bill Clinton, Rudy Giuliani, Colin Powell, Jimmy Carter, George Bush (both of them), Jerry Ford and many sports and screen personalities. I also was invited to do TV appearances and radio shows and a great agent landed me a book deal with Random House that resulted in two #1 NY Times best sellers.
Being a good investor and getting the market right has its rewards; my own hedge fund to run, great educations for the kids (we now have a doctor and a lawyer in the family), beautiful homes in Jackson Hole and Georgia, adventure travel on horseback in Kenya, heli-boarding in New Zealand, Harley rides across the southwest and Mexico and an almost-Olympic horse (Can’t Fire Me and Becky Holder were short-listed for the 2012 Olympics in London but didn’t make the team). And money lets you give back: We support children of Green Beret fathers who died in combat and therapeutic riding for kids and wounded warriors. And we teach as many people as possible the basics of Rule #1 investing.
